Ford 300 inline six in a Ford Granada

this is my son's first car, it's a '75 Granada he got for free, pretty decent interior and fresh paint, didn't come with engine and steering box.

He's already overhauled this Ford 300 CID Inline six from a Ford truck that I got in the shop, it's free so it's going in the car mated to a fresh C4 tranny.

there are two main issues, first and simplest is that the engine is longer than the "small" 250 sixes that ford puts in the granadas so no room for a mechanical fan up front, an electric unit in front of the radiator solves that easily, the real problem is down there, the oil pan has a huge REAR sump, the granada has no room for a rear sump.

I posted the above, plus a question about reversing the spindles to convert to a front steering, in the steering & suspension section, and seems like it would be a better option dealing with the oil pan mod.

besides finding a pan with a front sump from a 4x4 truck which will be quite unlikely over here, can someone tell me some tips about the fabrication of the modified pan? should I weld it bolted to the block to prevent distortion? TIG or brazing? can I make it shallower to hold 1 galon and a quart only?

and second question, what do you think of using the torque monster 300 I6 in a granada? I don't want a fast car, just a reliable and economic mean of transportation for my son, he'll have to buy his own gas.

Biggest question is will it fit under the hood?

Why not a 302 with a regular pan, its a drop in with factory mounts?

Sell the 300 to pay for the 302?

yes it fits, remote air cleaner required tough.

it's free

a big truck engine in a car sounds kinda cool

I love the idea of making my son use his brains to make it fit, will help him develop more than regular bolt-on skills

A friend in mine, way back put a 300 six in a 60 Falcon....Won the Indy Nationals with it....1972, I think......H/MP class

WOW..!! I hope my son doesn't find this picture.. lol he's aready been talking about turbocharging it, but I don't want him doing it... yet... lol

the pan mod is not that complicated, ford used this weird U turn for the oil pickup to go from the pump to the rear sump, so it's only a matter of using a straight piece of pipe, the rest is just a bit of sheetmetal fabrication, I started it today, won't be a big issue.

Most 4x4s have a rear sump. I think you need a pan from an older 2wd

pan modification is on it's way, seems easier than I tougth. now I will need a new dipstick, maybe I'll have to build one that goes directly to the pan 'cos the hole in the block was left at the rear.

Some models might have had a dipstick into the pan, I know it migrated around some over the years.

Bad idea in my opinion. A front-mounted fan obstructs the flow of air into the radiator more than it helps. Cut the core support so you can fit the 300 radiator into the car, positioning it so that you are using all the original cooling components that came on the 300.

240's were used in full size cars with front sump pans

since there is no A/C in this car your idea sounds good to me, seems like there is room to do it. Sure I'll do it, thanks.

been busy latelly thinking of a way to install a rack and pinion power steering unit, but a box from a F250 seems like is gonna work fine, a GM box won't. And no I can't find a granada used unit here, the one with the ram, I don't like it anyway, I want a regular P/S box or rack.

Augusto, I really love the direction you're going with the six cylinder. Just something about that straight six... Had one in pickup years ago. It was an old government vehicle with a lot of miles. I drove it hard and couldn't break it.

I am also happy to see no one giving you a hard time about it. I love to see guys doing different stuff. Those are the cars I look for at a show.

Anyway, it would be great to see some pics of your work. Good Luck.

I'm a diehard lover of V8's but for some reason I just love the idea of using the big block of sixes in a car, let's see how it performs.

I finally got time in the shop to install the engine and make a trial fit.

for some reason my employees loved doing this job

it went in with no issues, the trans is bolted in the crossmember, the driveshaft is installed, no problems at all

the oil pan that I modified fitted great in the place left by the V8

there's plenty of room to fabricate a pair of engine mounts

there's no room for a mechanical fan, but I already knew this, I'll be using an electric fan in front of the radiator pushing air in.

plenty of room for the exhaust pipe.

the hood seems that will close fine, the engine is not that tall, I'll be using a low profile carburetor anyway, maybe a Hitachi 2 barrel from a Nissan truck.

So guys, it is possible installing a big truck inline six in a Granada.

hopefully I'll be driving this in a month or so, I'll get back with reports about it's performance, meanwhile I would like to hear your comments.
