Ford 302, 5.0 Engine timing

I have a 1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0, I recently rebuilt the engine. When I set it to top dead center and made sure the rotor button lined up with the dis. cap, it fired right up but only ran for about 15 seconds. After this every time I start it I have to place it a TDC and it will only run for 10-15 seconds. It also sounded like it was detonating in one or two of the cylinders if anyone can help me with this I would be very grateful!! What am I doing wrong?

With the TFI ignition, base timing has to be set with the SPOUT signal disabled.

To KULTULZ

I am not familiar with the SPOUT signal. If you could elaborate on the subject I would greatly appreciate it. Thanx for replying!

Is it the 5.0 H.O. engine? I believe they have a different firing order than a normal 5.0 as well. Could that be part of the problem?

Be very very careful how you rout your ignition wires. These engines are known to crossfire from the factory and they can destroy themselves in the process. there is an old TSB on this subject. I don't hve a database right here, but if someone else could look up the TSB for 5.0 L for Mustang and Bronco ignitions and post it.
