Ford 302 - Interference engine or no?

Is the ford 302 an interference engine? I question the timing chain on mine even tho its only got 123k on it. There is a sound coming from the engine that sounds like it could be the timing chain slapping the timing cover but I don't know.

Is there a way to check the slack in the timing chain without pulling everything apart?

yes you can
with a breakerbar and a socket, put it on the crank bolt
pull the distributor cap. turn the engine (breaker bar) clockwise, see the rotor turn, now slowly, turn the breakerbar counter clockwise , noting how long it takes before the rotor starts to turn..
it should be almost no slack between when you move the breakerbar to when the rotor turns..
if you use the timing makes on the balancer as a guide you can see how many degrees it takes before it moves.

as far as the valves hiting pistons if the chain lets go.. ya big mess..

Pull the fuel pump and check it through the slot where it bolts up at.
should be able to reach it and shine a light and see just how sloppy it is, JMO
have checked them this way several times. You don't want the timing chain to jump while that thing is running bent valves and all kind of bad thing can happen. IMHO
