Ford 360 vs 460

I have a 1973 ford f-350 dump truck. It currently has a stock 360 in it. I was woundering the pros and cons of going to a 460. as far as gas, complexity of swap.

I have a 460 in mind. its out of a 78 with 80k on it. my current 360 also has 80k.

any insight would be great.


also. the truck is a 4 sp manual.

do it. big heavy nice power, realtivly good mileage if you put an edelbrock 650 on it. i would put a mild cam in it. oh yeah...do it. i have a 460 in my motorhome and I love it. My mercury has a 429(same block diff stroke) and it hauls a big heavy boat like a champ. both have the same aftermarket carb. a 650 does a good job and my car gets about 16 cruising and 12 at worst towing a boat. motor home is about 12-14 with 16 on the flats going speed limit.

Well of course its going to use some more gas than the 360 but it's in a dump truck so that isn't your biggest concern. I have a 1980 motor home that has a chrysler 440 in it and that thing eats my lunch in fuel! You probably aren't taking it cross country though so just evaluate your situation!

If you switch to the 460 make sure you get the timing chain and gears for a police application. It will give you a little more power and torque.

You'll need a bell housing..360 (FE block) and 429/460 (385 series) use 2 different bell housing bolt patterns.

460 motors are a much better motor than that old 360..

You will have to change the upper and lower motor mounts along with the bell housing. The exhaust will also have to be cut and refit to the 460, but it will be all worth it. BTW if you cannot find a 460 bell housing, look for one off a 351M or 400 as they are much more common. You can also use a 351M or 400 inspection plate but you will have to cut the hole larger that goes around the back of the crankshaft.

FORD began making truck specific 460's in 1979. Things such as oil coolers and later, FI.

Why do you want to change out the 360? Is this a T-18 or T-19 4/S?

You could also stroke the 360(390 block 352 crank) back to a 390

I can't imagine why this would even even up for consideration if there is a choice - the 460 is a better engine in all respects Hp and torque wise plus after market parts are readily available. And you give up nothing on gas mileage. A 360 was NOT a better idea from Ford.

Before a 460 is installed, a new straight-up timing gear set should be installed rather then the 9* OEM retard gear set - it makes a big difference. And an Edelbrock 600CFM carb is all you need as the OEM Holley for a 460 is only about 500cfm. Then add a DuraSpark ignition (a '78 might already have that as it was phased in about then. A '79 for sure has DuraSpark)

i realy dont know what tranny is in the dump i just got it. But i noticed the 360 doesnt pull hills well even unloaded. i was just worried about gas milage. its a good 20-60 miles evey time i make a trip. also. will the accessories swap from the 360 to 460 (alternator p/s pump ect.) thankis for all the insight.

Your alternator will work with the proper brackets..the water pump is different power steering pump with the correct brackets..

Setting up a truck engine for that service is a whole different animal..Seldom do we see over 3500 rpm in a truck..so the 500 cfm carb is fine..run the cam straight up..use the stock heads and valve springs and the cam does not have a whole lot of lift and duration as we set those up to build a lot of torque at somewhere in the mid range..Idle is about 3-400 or so just ticking over is all..

PM me and I will give you the name and addy for the cam grinder I use who can grind you a cam for that..

Wow, I'm envious. I have a 460 in a 24' motorhome and a tad over 8 mpg is about the best I can do.

A 390 or a 390 crank (as mentioned before) would be an improvement and would be an easy swap too.

I installed a 460 out of a Lincoln in my 78 F250 that had a 400. It does around 12-14 on the highway with a 4 speed manual transmission and a 600 cfm Edelbrock 4 barrel carb. If I was to get a later model 5 speed trans, I probably could get 16 mph.

what all is involved with the 390 crank swap? is it cost affective?

Just the crankshaft and connecting rods if I remember right. The harmonic balancer might be different, along with the flex plate, or flywheel. It is externaly balanced if I remember right.
