Ha! And I was right. I checked with my favorite Ford man and he says the only engines to receive letters were the 302 - to differentiate between the 302 and 302C (Aussie engine) - and the 351 - to differentiate between Cleveland, Windsors and the M series.

I happen to have a 351m and it is a hunk of s#!t |

Noxious, interested in buying a 400M already built? I happen to have one mildly built in my garage and have no use for it now, approx 400HP depending on exhaust, 600 Holley vacuum secondaries with center hung bowls, 272 Cam Dynamics cam, Oiling mods, Single plane Holley intake, 7 blade stainless flex fan, 6 quart Milodon pan plus too much else to list. 1250 CDN or $800 US, I have $3000 CDN invested. Act soon it won't last long.
If you want pics send me an e-mail at cjridley@shaw.ca |

I believe that you will find the M on the end of 351M is to differentiate it from it's derivative, the 351C. There is no 400 C or M.

[QB][/QB]

The high HP 400M got my attention and I just wanted to reply with a couple of questions and was wondering if anyone out there could help me out. I am about to re-build a 1978 400M that came out of a Bronco. I have a set of 1970 351C 4V heads with milled aluminum exhaust blocks to straighten out exhaust angle. These heads were the good ones with closed combustion chambers and canted valves (very similiar to 302&351Boss heads). I would dearly love to put these heads on the 400M. Everything I have read says that 351C, 351M, and 400M heads are interchangeable, but they always refer to 2V heads, 4V heads are never mentioned. I am thinking that I should be able to put these heads on the 400M, get an aftermarket 4V intake, 650 to 750 carb, and mild cam, and get an easy 300HP. Does anyone have anything to add or think that this will not work? Please respond. |

to 70'sFords member, or #5396 I too am building a 400M with 351Boss 4V closed chamber heads. I'm anxious to see how much power it'll make, I'm
estimating and easy 550 to 600 horse with a Weiand tunnel, 10:1 forged pistons, cam, etc.. It's also 60 over and the undiscovered gem is that the 351-400M truck motors had steel cranks, not cast, plus with 60 over, there's still meat to go another 60+ in the future. Any and all help, advice, or comments on this type of build up would be greately appreciated. |

allright, i got a 351m laying around the shop,
why is a 351m 400 cubes? wouldn't that make it a 400? seems everyone else has this same problem, cept' bbb! and secondly, shouldn't this be in the engine section? wait a second, i asked this stuff a while back in the engine section, hrumph! :p |

hello from blighty!!. reading your posted notes on the 400. i have a 400 with KB148 pistons (bushed 351c)- gives me 10.7:1, solid compcams 282 cam(advert'd), 4v quench heads, stainless speedpro valves, triple springs, crane roller rockers (1.7:1), mallory ign. not screwed together so far.
Planned are 4v headers. 850d/p holley and weiand 351c hi-rise intake c/w 8205 intake spacers. what power would you expect from this (bhp / torque), and how high would u rev the engine as the rods / crank are standard? also, would you recommend grinding the leading edge of the crank throws to reduce drag (then rebalance)? I also have a mild 400 with hyd compcam, 750 vac sec carb, offenhauser dual port 360 intake, fuel pump blanked, Cloyes timing set. otherwise standard. what power from this u reckon? sounds healthy, will be on road about 4 weeks in 1.5 ton car. we shall see... thanks, Mike. |

In regards to the 351C 351M 400, these engines are all cast at the Cleveland Plant. That's why they indicate CP on the heads and block. As well to be able to tell them apart from the 351C, 351M and don't forget 351W as all engines are different. And yes the 400 is M (Modified) because it's the big brother of the 351M.Few parts interchange such as the cam , valve train comp and heads ...that's it.
These engines can produce gobs of HP and Torque. This engine is a strong contender over the big blocks due to it's bore, stroke ratio as well it gets better gas mileage than the Ford BB. (not much).Iv'e built one and you really can wake this baby up. |
