was the headgasket on right

The dealer worked on my 63 fastback just before i bought it in 64, he original owner got drafted and couldn't make the payments on army pay so I got just take over loanI. the headgasket was on backwards so water only circulated in the front of the engine. over heating etc...I pulled the 390 and put in a 3522 then sold the car and put the 3 carb engine in my roadster.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to mention a backwards head gasket. The large open water ports ussually go to the rear.

I checked the rod bearings and they have the oil squirter notch. I also double-checked the head gaskets when I took them off. They were both installed correctly.

I strongly suspect my ignition timing was the trouble, however a slight manifold leak along the left front may have something to do with it as mentioned previously. All I can do is be very carfeful in the re-build and watch for those things.

So far, pistons are a problem. I had this engine balanced and the piston weights were 597 grams. So far, all I can find are much lighter pistons...around 520 grams. Not sure if that will significantly upset the engine balance or not. Howver, I am still waiting on some custom companies to respond to my request for quote.
