I don't know what year would be best for the engine but I can recommend a good Cougar site. www.mercurycougar.net

I have been known to paint Aluminum heads the same color as the rest of the engine. It really fools the best of them.

Any 429/460 block from 68/71 is a good basis. C8VE/C9VE and DOVE-C heads flow about the same and are good for street performance.. CJ and PI heads are rare and pricey.

Start With A Fresh Master Card, or more. Be careful of Rip offs. You Got a lot to learn, if you are going to build it. Getting a Long Block from FORD RACING Would be the Fastest way.

The D1ve blocks are substantially strong enough to 700 hp and are much more plentiful. Dove heads are the hot ticket but D3 heads with some porting can be made to flow well enough for cheap. Check out reincarnation automotive guys name is scott. He is the best I know at making the stock stuff rock and roll. 460ford.com for all your 385 needs
