Ive got a 02 ford ranger w/3.0 v6 and my tranny o/d lite on the dash is flashing. The shop i took it too says it needs a rebuild! This truck has only 80k miles! Anyone have any idea if it could be something else. Thanks

the OD light flashes when a trouble code is present in the computer. Knowing what the codes are helps to ID the area of the trans that has problems.

A trouble code does not necessarily tell you the exact part that is bad, a trouble code is an indicator of the problem area.

Is the trans acting badly? Lost any of the forward gears or other wrong actions.

Lots of problems with this trans. It is called a 5R55E/W. Ford redesigned the trans for the new Explorer chassis (yours) and introduced a wealth of new problems. The biggest trouble spot is the servo bores for the two bands the trans uses to upshift. Most commonly the overdrive bore wears allowing for significant slippage. Ironically, this slippage is not usually felt when driving until significant internal damage has occurred. The computer, on the other hand, is able to detect slippage and records codes indicating incorrect gear ratio, sometimes for several different gears. There is no easy or quick fix for these problems. A quality rebuild will include servo bore machining and rebushing along with other upgrades. Your trans shop should be able to detail these and explain their benefits. Ford does not address this issue and their rebuilts DO NOT have repaired srevo bores.

This tranny was originally designed for european use primarily -- small/light cars...
the additional load of heavier vehicles took its toll.
