Ford 5.0 oil level problems

I have a 90 Town Car with a 5.0, factory double sump pan.

Since new the car reads oil quantity irraticly ("on the level", pun intended).

Let it sit for hours and it might say 1 qt. low. Add a quart and then run it and let it sit and it will read almost one quart over.

Anybody have any insites into this "normal" condition.

243,000 miles now.

it could be ur just not on level ground that could make a huge difference

i work at a independant quick lube shop, my boss tells me that certian cars will do that that certian ones need to be checked at operating temp.And others not. im pretty shure the 5.0 holds 5 quarts correct..?? but with the double sump im not shure. if i were you i would just change the oil when it is cold,find out what the recommend amount is add it, start the car to fill the filter(duh) and check it cold to see where its at. then just use where it is on the dipstick as you benchmark to add oil next time when it is cold.

My 88 Crown Vic with the 5.0 and double hump pan shows 1 quart OVER after an oil change, if I add the amount FORD says it takes.

I tried just filling it to the full mark. But if I let it get 1/2 qt down from the "FULL" mark, I get a check oil light.

Overall I have found letting the car sit over night or at least 4 hours gives me the most consistant readings.

With that many miles is that thing maybe a little sludged up? And who does the oil change You or a quick lube? they might not know what it takes.

I do. It has always had Mobil 1 synthetic and is clean inside. It has done this since new.

YES the car is parked perfectly level.

My thought is which of the dualing sumps the engine oil collects in immediately before shutdown. Not a very good design with no type of balance tube between the sumps.

True. Yesterday it was reading 1/2 qt low after sitting all night on the concrete. Added 1/2 quart...... never started it, and 30 minutes later it showed 1/2 inch above the full mark...... demon possessed. LOL

A Mobil 1 car exlcusively.
Does not use oil.
Trans shifts like new.
Rear end still humming along.

Best car I ever owned. Hope the 2000 will be as good.
