Post Ford 8.8 questions

Hey there- Does anyone having any thoughts about using a Ford 8.8 inch in a street rod application? There is an outfit that has a bunch of new Explorer rears with disc brakes and all that they bought in bulk and are now selling them. The real question is can they handle mild HP? My plan is to put about 450 ponies in the engine compartment and want to make sure the rear end can handle it. I have just started to build a 9 inch but I'll have about a grand + into it when I am done. I can get a new 8.8 for $425 plus shipping. What do you all think? Thanks. Mike

The ford explorer 8.8's have 31 spline axles.
The ford ranger 8.8's have 28 spline axles.
I have a ranger rear in a 400hp s-10.
I have put an explorer 8.8 in a 4x4 ranger.
The explorer rear looks strong, the differential carrier looks very similiar to a GM 8.5, in fact every bearing and seal except for the pinion seal interchanges between the 28 spline 8.5 GM and 28 spline 8.8 ford.
The 31 spline ford uses the same differential carrier and ring and pinion as the 28 spline ford.
The factory ford traction loc limited slip differentials suck though.

Thanks for the thoughts Jason. I am really interested in what you guys think about how the 8.8 will hold up in everyday driver use with ~450 horses and mild driving. Please send your thoughts. Thanks. Mike
