Post Ford 8" or 9"?

Is there drawbacks to the 8", over the 9", other than limited gear ratios?

Hello! Well the 8" inch ford rear is just a smaller design of the 9" inch version with a few slight diffrences, obviously smaller. . Both are good for intended uses, However, in anything with a high horsepower/torque application, I would definetly use the 9" incher. The 8" incher use 28 spline axles and is perfect for a driver street rod. The 8" is significantly lighter than the 9" and comes in numerous widths. It was used in everything from Mavericks, Granada's and Mustang II's. The 9" incher that was used in most passenger car applications also uses a simular 28 spline axle. The heaver duty 9'incher used in 1/2 ton ford trucks and performance ford cars uses a 31 spline axle and is the choice for horsepower. Because the 9" incher is the choice for most motorsports there are a unlimited selection of gears, aftermarket axles and other components. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT

RE; 8" vs 9" ford diff; I read about 10 or so yrs ago that 8" is ok up to approx. 300 hp and beyond that one should use a 9" makes sense if you think about the orig. applications
