Ford 8 rear question

I'm using an 8" rear under my V8 Pinto. Currently it's got 3.00:1 open. I was gonna get a mini spool because they are cheap, but after seeing a buddy twist off an axle with his, I decided not to use it! I'm going with one of the Powermax lockers to keep it streetable, and 4:10 gears.
My question was, the 8" is only available with 28 spline axles, as opposed to the 9" in 28 or 31 spline. The lockers fit both the 8" and 9" and come with either the 28 or 31 spline. I am also getting after market axles, so I was wondering if I can switch the rear from 28 to 31 spline, and is it much stronger?

Why not just upgrade to a 57 - 59 Ford 9 inch ... ??
9 inch parts are way more plentiful and stronger also.

Do you know how much HP you are putting to the ground? An 8" is only good for about an honest 300HP. Things get sticky over that (CURRIE has strengthened 8" parts). If the spool is cut for 31 spline, just have the axle manufacturer cut 31 spline. It is stronger (35 is even stronger). Talk with the axle maker first.
