Hi,
I worked in Ford parts from '79 to '92, and this is my recollection:

Yes, I'm quite sure that you can. I'm fairly sure that the OD of the hub on the side gears is the same on both 28 and 31 spline. The inside (spline) diameter is larger on the 31-spline and is inherently stronger.

28-spline were usually on passenger cars, and 31 were used on trucks and some muscle cars.

HTH,
Don

Check this site for a lot of good info http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...ch/index.shtml

To answer your question:

Sorry, I must have missed the fact that one of these diffs was an "open" diff, so yup ... you're going to have to make a trip to the Ford store (or to a gear shop).

I think that all you'll need to convert that 31-spline carrier to a 28-spline is a pair of differential side gears.(#10,11 in the exploded view) The posi ones are a little different than the "open" ones ... I think they have a hub on one side.

While you have it all apart, have a good look at the spider gears(#4), thrust washers(#3,19), pins(#5,6), lock pin (not shown?), and clutches(13,14,15,18). Pick up a bottle of friction modifier, unless you are refilling with gear oil specifically designed for limited slip differentials.

Oh yeah ... get 10 new copper washers and a housing gskt as well. How's the pinion seal?
