ford 9 inch width

hey everyone. i'm swapping out the tiny little axle from my mustang and replacing it with a nine incher. my replacement came from a truck and it is quite clear that it will place the tires outside the fenders. it is illegal to have a narrowed rear-end on a street driven car here and besides i have a long way to travel if i wanted to get it done, not to mention the cost. i was wondering if all nine inchers are created equal in their dimensions. i'm sure there are doner cars that are mid size with a nine inch but our local scrap yard is very limited, almost useless. i dont want back spacing with skinney tires and fender flares, if possible. also it doesnt matter if i go disc or pads for now. i have lots of tables and charts for axles but none of them say how wide they are. can anyone help out or rattle off some donor car that i can hunt down? the engine will be a mildly warmed over 351w, nothing fancy. i know i will have to fabracate brackets and perches so that isn't a problem either. gearing doesn't matter because i will be getting some that will best suit this application. thanks for the help.

re: ford 9 inch width

It's not illegal to run a narrowed rear on a street driven car. All you need to do is measure the distance from mounting surface to mounting surface on your old rear and have the new 9" narrowed to those dimensions and it will fit perfectly. There are lots of 9" rears around of varying widths if you want to look hard enough but having one narrowed to your exact requirements will work just as well.

Check this site out to see what rear ends might work for you.

re: ford 9 inch width

centerline and pencilneck- great response. the sites are perfect. when i hit the search engine i get sites trying to sell me ford parts and a million ads. these sites were exactly what i was looking for. thanks very much. up here in ontario we're really limited to what we can do. to get my car registered, i first have to get a safety check and that means the car goes up on a hoist. no frame repairs or alterations are allowed and that includes the axle. but if you know the mechanics favourite brand of rum and are nice to him, sometimes you get lucky and he kinda misses things. i did this once and it saved me a lot of hassle and maybe it'll work again with a narrowed rear-end. maybe for all i know the laws have relaxed and i could be wrong about this. thank god for rum anyway. thanks for the big time help.
