Ford AOD

I have a Ford AOD transmission in my 60 Comet. I have adjusted the TV cable to where the trans shifts great in all gears. However, when I kick it down at about 45 MPH the trans starts to act like its slipping. The engine speed increases but the car doesn't go any faster. Any ideas? PS, the tranny started acting like this as soon as I put it in the Comet. Prior to that it was in an 84 LTD and shifted fine.

Aod

Spend a few bucks, take it to a tranny shop have it adjusted with a pressure gauge. You can damage an AOD quick if this is off.

Geometry on the TV cable linkage at the carb is more important on a AOD type trans than a 700r4 ........ must correct.

IF it all setup correctly , the sprag for 2nd gear could be weak IF the trans is kicking down that far at 45 mph.

I realize this is an older post, but...

What kind of fuel intake/carburetion system are you running? I am guessing the '84 LTD had the old tv rod setup? Did you switch to the Lokar cable setup? As mentioned above the geometry of the tv cable hookup on the carb linkage is very important. I swapped a Holley 4 barrel onto my 351W Crown Vic in place of the stock 2bbl VV carb. When I did I ground off the tv cable hookup lever from the 2 barrel and grafted it onto the linkage on the Holley. Sounds ugly, but it's not and it works perfectly.

You can also set the tv cable pretty easily by yourself if you're handy. I use an old oil pressure gage that has finer increments than most seem to have these days. I fab'd up a block in place of the Ford tool to extend the cable to set the pressure. There is all sorts of info on the net about setting the tv pressure. Beware that some is for the rod setup and some is for the cable. Also if you see no mention of using a pressure gage skip it and go to the next site. I believe I set mine to 33 psi with the block installed and less than 5 with it removed and at idle.

AOD cable

Hey,thanks for the reply,I just got a Lokar cable for it. I don't know what it had to start with. This is a 54 Ford sedan and the 84 lincoln 5.0 and AOD was in the car as an unfinished project.I am running a dual plane & 600 Holley,I got a pedal and cable from an 84 Crown vic but the cable is about 3" too long,so i will get a lokar cable I can shorten and the matching bracket. That way the cables will be matching braided too. Thanks again! Jeff
