I want to install an aod in my 64 comet conv along with a 302(72 block with gt-40 heads)-I'm somewhat confused about the balances of the flexplate and a (tv?cable)that moves with acclerator--the trans I have is in a lincolin town car(maybe 88) whole car

Ford changed the amount of flywheel "un-balance" around 1980.

The throttle valve (TV) cable on the AOD tells the transmission how far the throttle is depressed. The trans uses this info to regulate the amount of fluid pressure. If the cable is not adjusted correctly, the trans might think you're easing around like Grandma when you're actually at full-throttle, & it'll wear out really fast.

AOD/302 swap

In the early 80's, Ford changed the offweight balance on the flywheel from 28 to 54 oz, on the 302/5.0, and while the flywheels will still interchange, you will have a serious imbalance problem if you go crossing them up. Before you start your venture, try putting the flex plate onto the torque converter and see if it will bolt on. If not, an easy way out will be to just get a later model flywheel that is drilled to accept the studs on your AOD converter and have it rebalanced to the 28 oz for your early 302. This shouldnt run you more than about $50.
I dont have a lot of experience with AOD's other than swapping one out, and I didnt mess with the TV cable or shift linkage, leaving them as they were with the origional transmission, and didnt have a problem with them. Best to get a book on your said transmission or find one and go over the section on adjusting the TV cable.
