Ford automatics use same mount?

Long story made short as possible. Putting a 1990's 302 into my 1996 Ranger. At this time the only tranny I have is a late 70's early 80's C4 (I believe). The converter from the tranny (came off a 351W) won't bolt to my 302 flex plate. I know Ford changed the balance on 302 in 1982 so do I get a convert or for the newer 302 and will it work with the older tranny? Or do I have to get a newer tranny? Now I have bolted the older tranny to the motor ,minus the convertor because it won't fit, and have used them to mount the motor in the Ranger. I have to move my crossmember but I want to make sure all will be the same if I have to get a newer tranny.
I have posted a similar question on here before and a guy gave me this long post on C4 trannys but really didn't answer my question about my flexplate converter problem. At least not to my simple mind. I am grateful for the help but can be "thick",if you know what I mean, at times.

C-4 flexplates balanced for 5.0s (50 oz/in) are available. 302 flexplates the weight is about 3 inches long, on the 5.0 flexplate the weight is about 6 inches long.

If I recall correctly your existing rear crossmember can be used by drilling new holes in the frame.
