Ford Big block 4 spd bellhousing

Is the ford 4 spd top loader manual transmission bellhousing the same depth and width for a 460,428, big block 429 cobra jet motors.
My problem is as follows; I have a 76 Ford Gran Torino with a 460 motor and a
4 spd top loader trans. This was a custom install when I bought the car, it was not a factory option.I have put a new matching clutch set-up in the car and rebuilt the trans. Now that everything is new and installed and a matching set (clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing) I am constantly grinding gears during shifting. The clutch does not seem to be releasing far enough. I was told by a Ford Enthusiast that the bellhousing for a Ford 429 Big Block Cobra jet is bigger and deeper than other big block bellhousing and that I need that for clearance. These are hard to find and very expensive and would like to know before I consider it the only solution.

I wish I knew what he is referring to. All 429's used the same bellhousing. If it was deeper, you would need a special F/4/S with a longer input shaft to fit it.

It sounds more like a clutch release problem. Use diaphram or finger style? Did you measure air gap between disc-flywheel/disc/plate when fully released? New pilot bearing? Input shaft bearing new? Needle bearings OK where main shaft enters input shaft? Any binding of throwout bearing on bearing retainer? Equalizer shaft bushings?

Thanks alot for your input!!! How about this???

351 modified and 400 are both big block bellhousings like the 429 / 460.

1.) Will they bolt up to the 429 / 460 ? and

2.) if they do will they give the same clearance as the big block bellhousing?

Also is there any differance between a truck or car bellhousing???

Yes, same mounting pattern.

That would have to be a light truck application. I would have to research that but assume that it would be the same as FORD used the F/4/S overdrive derivative the 4/S/OD in some period light truck applications.

What are you trying to do?
