Ford C-4 Kickdown Question

I just had my Ford C-4 rebuilt and was installing it back into my vehicle when I think I stumbled on a problem. I was installing the Lokar kickdown cable and had to remove that stock kickdown lever from the transmission which was secured with a 1/2"nut. Prior to removing it I felt that the lever was under some sort of spring tension that returned the lever to the same position if you moved it through the kickdown motion. The tension would return it to the starting point. Well, after removing the stock lever and installing the Lokar lever there is no longer any tension on the lever. You can move the lever back and forth as it would when it is hooked up, but nothing returns the lever to the starting point. If you move it to one end it stays there and vise-versa.
Is there some component inside of the transmission that applies tension to the kickdown lever to allow it to move but always return it to the one side. If so, and I need to replace this part, how big of a repair is it? Can it be repaired with the trans in the vehicle or would it need to be removed and stripped apart again.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Yes there is a spring controlled valve that works on that lever, you need to pull the pan and replace the lever in its spot. its has been a long time since I have done that and you night have to drop the valve body to get to the valve but I dont think so. anyway it wont cost anything but a pan gasket maybe and about 1 hour of time. I pulled that part out plenty of times to flip the controls over to work on floor shifters. good luck.

Thanks for the reply. It is great to hear that I won't have to remove the trans from the vehicle to make the repair.
