Ford Duraspark distributor question

I wiped out the distributor gear on my Duraspark distributor. I don't have a press, so I was tapping the new gear on with a socket and a small hammer. I had the distributor upside down on my bench with the top of the distributor shaft sitting on a piece of wood as I tapped the gear down. The gear is now in place and I still have my roughly .030 shaft play between the shaft collar and the housing. But now I noticed that the upper advance shaft has some up and down play also. I don't remember if there was any play at that point before I was tapping the gear down. Is this normal or do I have to fix something? Thanks...

Mike

The up and down play on a Ford distributor is normal.I've replaced many when the old stators were shot.Never had a comeback .You probably had it before, just didn't notice it.

Sorry that It took me so long to get back to ya.Even when you install the distributor you'll notice that the oil pump shaft takes away just about all the slack in the distributor shaft.Try it and see.
