that trans has been put behind v-8's before so, either youve got the wrong kickdown rod, or its setup is wrong. unless theres after market stuff available for the fmx, it never came with a cable for kickdown.

ford fmx kickdown

Thanks for the reply. this is a 49 merc replica and the engine is to close to the firewall, the rod wont fit. I thought a cable would be easier than moving the engine forward. thanks bill

Cable would be easier. You may have to fab up the brackets.

Lokar sells a cable kit for C4 - C6 trans. maybe it is workable for the FMX

The kickdown tube is similar in quality to large diameter steel fuel line or even electrical conduit. I have fabricated custom linkages using the original ends soldered onto custom bent tubing on a few occasions with copper couplings, use silver solder for the best results.

Seamless fuel line gives the best results for a complete linkage mockup and bends with the tightest radius, of course this all assume your carb has the proper linkage to begin with. Make sure it is the right length before you solder it all up as there is limited adjustment at the carb linkage.

If you want a factory look use fuel line ( 3/4" I think) and squeeze the ends in a smooth jaw vice like a milling machine vice. Then you can drill the proper size hole and insert an off the shelf plastic bushing available from any auto supply store, but using factory ends can look nice as well just make sure the soldered couplings are close to the ends and give it a shot of silver paint to hide the copper couplings.

Good luck with your project.

Use a Lokar cable and save yourself time and trouble.

This is mine with a Loker cruise control cable as well:

As a note, FMX like Ford's C4 and C6 has several different trans mounted kick down levers. You may have to change it out to work with a cable.
