Ford Gear Ratio

ok im gonna start to redo my ford mustangs running gear since i blew out the 6 cylinder in it and im gonna upgrade to a 302, My gear ratio is 2.83:1 will i have to change this ratio to get better street results for this car? and if so what would be a good ratio to have add a lil kick to his stang. oh and i have a c4 tranny and am considering rebuilding of the c4 with a shift kit or going to a AOD tranny for that overdrive element. All comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jose

YEs to see the true benefits of that 302 You will have to upgrade those dogs of gears. I would go with either 3.23's or even 3.55's
both work great for street and for cruisin the freeways.

Just rebuild the c4 dont mess with an AOD alls youll do is eat more power and make your car heavier. unless your running 4.11's and plan on driving on freeways you dont need that 4th gear. JIMO

Ok thanks for the info on the gear ratio, also would that remain being a 8inch rear end or would it move me over to the 9 inch rear ends? And i was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to rebuild my own tranny by watching one of those rebuild videos or am i better off having someone else rebuild it for me?

If i do rebuild the tranny myself i want to add on a shift kit what company makes the best shift kit for the price?

Unless your building serious horsepower stick with the 8 inch rearend, as for rebuilding the tranny if you are confident I would say go for... there is a good manual with stepp by step instructions with pictures on how to rebuild your C4,
Haynes Techbook Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul. I bought this manual and rebuilt my transmission myself knowing nothing and my tranny came out good as new. Doing it yourself you must take your time and DONT skip anything, check and do everything the book tells you and make sure you check all your tolerances this is key to how your tranny will turn out. As for the shift kit I suggest the B&M shift kit works great and isnt too pricey.
With all of this I would estimate by doing iot yourself you will save anywhere from 400-600 bucks!

alright thanks for all the help, i think my tranny needs to be rebuilt badley cuz whenever i put it into reverse the tranny gives a bad kick in reverse. Its done it since i got the stand and thought it was normal till i drove my stepdads new stang and saw how smooth the tranny was in it. Also im new in this whole changing rear ends and wanted to ask that when changing ratios would i have to change out the whole rear end? i already have the v8 5 bolt main on this car.

thanks for all the help
