yep. Unless it's a 144-250 I6, then there cast in the integral log manifold about center. most carbs cover them up and usually a leaky or previous leaker valve cover will cause it to be quite hidden. clean them up and there easy to read
The casting code is on the bottom side, near the flat surface area where there are "low areas" in the casting. Anything after E5 or so ('85) will be for a fuel-injected engine and will not fit the earlier carb engines (the head will bolt on the block but the manifolds won't fit the head).
There is precious little reliable information out there on the Ford six cylinder motors, but I'll pitch in with what little bit I have been told about them.
The C8 in the number tells you that the head is a 1968 basic design. The D in the number tells you that this casting is the 4th major change to the design and the 12 tells you that there have been 12 minor changes over the years. Now, please don't flame me over this. I think that is correct info, but can't be sure. Searched the net for about an hour and didn't come up with any concrete info on the number itself.
That comes out to be a 240 head I think.. 240 and 300 are the same except stroke. 240 head has smaller combustion chambers than the 300 heads, gives a nice compression bump
What is the valve arrangement- E-I-I-E-I-E-E-I-E-I-I-E (144 to 250 cid small 6's) or E-I-E-I-E-I-E-I-E-I-E-I (240/300 cid big 6's)?
