Ford rear axles

I need some help to answer this question. I have a set of Ford axles out of a '79 Granada. They are 28 spline. I'd use the rearend but unfortunately its an 8" housing so I am not gonna waste any more money on it. I have an heavy duty rearend that i's like to use with these axles since they are already the right length and all I would need to do is get my housing shortened.

So, knowing all that, the Question I need some info/guidance on is Even though my axles are out of an 8" rearend, are they gonna be the same as ones from a small bearing 9"?

Any help or suggestions.

thanx

WELCOME TO Hotrodders.com

The 9 inch housing can be shortened to use your Granda axles ... and they will work.

Some 28 spline axles taper down ...
They are NOT as strong as the ones that do not taper down IMHO ...

If you are concerned about the strength ... I suggest finding or buying the 31 spline axles ...

Again WELCOME

Deuce ..

thanx, I though the axles would work. I was looking at some of the after market manufactures websites and it showed the same bearings for both applications. I was just confused because I read on one site I found in a search and it mentioned that the 8" axles were medium journal, and the 9" ones are large journal? Whatever that means?

thanx

Every 8 inch Ford I ever saw used the " small bearing axle "
9 inch Ford axles came in different sizes. Some ( the most common around my area ) are the same small bearing axles. Station wagons, pickups, convertibles and some others came with the large bearing.

I have a lincoln rearend that came with factory disc brakes. Its the same style housing as the F-150's but it has Large bearings and 28 spline axles.
