Ford Rearends

How can you ID the difference between a 7.5" and a 8.8" rear axle? looking for a 8.8 for mustang

The tag will tell you if it's a 7.5 or 8.8. The lower set of numbers will tell you the gear ratio, which differential it has and the ring gear size. It will say something like 3L.08 8.8 xxxx. 3.08 would be the gear ratio, L is for the Traction Lock (posi) differential and 8.8 is the ring gear size. If there is no L then it has a standard differential.

What are you looking for in the 8.8? I've got one that is completely rebuilt that I need to sell.

Look at the rear cover. The 8.8 is kinda flattened on all 4 sides, while the 7.5 is flattened only on the top and bottom, with curved sides.

Where in the USA are you? I have a brand new 2005 8.8 Mustang rear end that I don't want.The car was bought new and made into a race car.
