Ford recalls 08 diesel trucks, Flaming exhaust

Seems the 08 Ford diesel trucks have a problem with a flaming exhaust.

When we had to do those recalls it was a pain in the butt day. When those trucks first came out and we had to go to training they told us that the egt at the tip can reach 1500*. If you every see one thats why it has that funny looking tip on it. It is ment to swirl the hot exhaust air with fresh air around it. The first thing they told us is when people start putting exhaust systems on these and get rid of that tip it would be hot enough to burn the paint off your car. This is from the ford classes so they new there was a problem all along.

I must be missing something.

From the article: "The 6.4L Power StrokeŽ engine achieves and regulates this heat by injecting small amounts of fuel during the exhaust stroke as it monitors the exhaust temperatures though the use of three temperature sensors located in the exhaust system."

Doesn't that seem like a waste? Surely they're working on ways to make it more efficient so that (a) there are less ~burnable~ particulates in the exhaust to start with and (b) there's no need to squirt fuel anywhere it's not used to produce power.

The reason they shoot diesel on the exhaust stroke is so it will create extremly high egt's. It is meant to clean the particulate trap so it will not clog up and cuase a big loss in power.
