Ford Vin info for new project car

Friends, I recently acquired a new 1932 project car and the VIN is AB5018577 - wondering if this was an assigned # or tied to some original Ford product. I was assuming it was the vin based off of the olater engine.

THANKS!

In 32, they didn't have a vin but used a serial number. The S/N for 32 V8 cars started with 18, the 4 cyl cars started with "B", Canadian cars started with "C".
That must be an assigned number, I don't know of any 30's or 40's Fords that started with AB.

WoodsEdge speaks the truth........

There " a lot " of 32 Ford projects that are Model A's in truth. People try to increase their 'value'. Ebay is full of them.

Post a picture..........

Let me be the first to welcome you here.

Nice bunch of folks for the most part

I also think that is an assigned number, probably from Alabama.

Model A's look a good bit like 32's. The family resemblance goes on to 1932. Look at a 28, then a 29, 30, 31 and last a 32. Small changes are noticeable. All are valuable and make neat projects. Ford made over 3 million Model A's and just over 300 thousand 32's. There where over 10 Model A's made for every 1932 Ford.

Look at the top of the cowl on a Model A, it has a gas cap.......32's do not. They have a vent. Model A's have a visor over the windshield.........32's do not (except commercial vehicles).

32 Frames are longer, wider and are curved are each end so the car can sit lower. They also have a pretty curved revel in the side.

As long as you have a title.........no biggie. You will be able to get a tag. A lot of the "Ford street rods" today have NO real pre 1940 real Ford part on them. They buy titles or paperwork to get on the road.....you are ahead of the game.

This is my 1932 Ford Roadster. I have owned it for over 25 years. It has been a HotRod since before 1940, got a SBC in 1956, got a BBC in 1966 and another SBC in 1980.

Here is a prime example of a mislabeled 32......

Neat project but not a 1932

Aren't there also a difference in the front fenders? I think the Model A fenders have a larger curve in the front (30-31) and the 1932 have the fender coming closer to the back of the front wheel. I don't know if you understand well, english is not my primary language. If you look at a model A and a 1932 from the side, you should see what I mean.

1932 Ford fenders are different than Model A's......
32 Fords have a longer wheelbase (103 and 1/2 for the Model A ...106 for the 32 ) so the fenders have to be different.

No 32 sheet metal is the same as any other Ford.

28 and 29's had 21 inch tires
30 and 31 's had 19 inch tires

32's were 18 inches.

32 had a long list of first..over the previous Fords

1) fuel pump ...and tank in the rear
2) pressure oil to the bearings
3) double drop frame
4) the V8
5) first Ford to have a ash tray (Henry hated smoking)
6) first Ford to have the frame exposed between the fenders
7) first to have 18 inch tires
8) first Ford to have a grille covering the radiator

Many other minor first.....

The 1932 Fords were first sold in March of 1932. Chevrolet sold more units than Ford (Chevrolet sold 32 Chevrolets for 12 months ...less than 10 for Ford). America was in the worst part of the 'Great Depression' in 1932. People wanted new cars but could not afford them. Many car companies went out of business during the depression. Ford lost over 70 MILLION dollars in 1932. The 32 was going to be a 2 year car (like most models before) but Henry came on out with the beautiful 1933's........to stimulate the economy. 1934 's were a slight modification of the 33's.

I like 28, 29, 30, 31, 33and 34 Fords....BUT I love 32's

Sorry for the ramble.......
