ford-y-block

On ford-y-blocks everyone connects one heater hose to the water pump and the other to the water jacket on the intake manifold. The moters manual shows both connected to the water pump. Why?

You won't get much flow to the heater if you connect both hoses to the water pump. The water pump pulls water in from the bottom of the radiator, and the heater core. The hot water for the heater flows from the hottest part of the motor, at the intake manifold crossover , through the heater core, then gets pulled into the water pump.

I looked in a 1957 motor's manual, and couldn't find the picture you reference, but I looked in a ford factory manual from a 64 pickup, (uses a 292 Y block), and see that one hose comes from the water crossover in the manifold, goes through the hot water control valve, then to the lower heater core fitting. The upper hose from the heater core gets returned to the water pump.

Later, mikey
