have a 292 in my 1957ranchero and thinking of purchasing the alum. heads,have any of you had first hand info on ar they worth the dollars etc. thnks for any info cliff

Don't know anything about 'em, but I'd have to have my arm twisted pretty good in order to cough up 2200 dollars for a set of Y-block heads. Makes no sense to me.

Haven't worked on y blocks in a few years, and only know of a couple of guys racing them and 1 runs iron heads, the other Mummert's aluminum. That's a lot of money for just a few HP and an extra jump in rpm!!!!! Unless you are laying out the bucks for the Cam, Pistons, Rods, Crank, Balancing ,Etc,Etc to use the heads to their potential! Then they would be a good choice!! But if your basically building a street engine for street performance I would think twice. They are pretty though:mwink:!! Lets see a pic of that 292 :thumbup: What cam and induction you planning?

thanks for the info,i have 030 over 292 with ecz g heads stock 57 4v cam with stock 4v manifold and holley 600 carb.my plans ar to build a stronger y in the future,car is a 57 ranchero ,3spd manual,spoke with a guy at a show who had the heads on a 292 and he was impresed,just looking for some opin. from other. ap the help cliff

eaton balanceing figures sound very good,especialy when comparing iron ecz G heads to the alum. a plus of over 50 hp. right out of the box. the rework of the iron heads was considerable and i would ges costly.still toying with info. negitive coments re yblocks ar rather un founded,not all roders want a sb chev. cliff

You're correct Cliff, my apologies if I stepped on your toes. If you're after more eye candy, go for it. But if you're after more power, I could make a whole lot more sense out of a 393W with aftermarket aluminum heads and RPM intake.

Cliff,
I have struggled with the same thing since these heads were first in design years ago by another company that let them fizzle before Murment took over.

I have a 312-4 (D) engine in the 57 T-bird, when we stopped showing the car to drive it, one of the things I did was pull a perfect low mileage and never rebuilt engine and tried to beef it up, the block showed it could handle a 120 boar, so I punched it out 80 thousands, slight milling of head and a high low rpm torque cam and had the heads ported, gave away the original carb to someone I did not like. (LOL).

Never did buy the heads as the Y’s are low RPMs and I just could not see where, I was starving for air or what good the extra rpms would do, as my mission was to make a reliable car wife could drive anytime she wanted or we could take on a weekend trip.

Of all the things I did to this car the thing that changed the car the most was taking out the fordomatic trans and putting in a mild beefed up AOD and at the same time, took out the 3:10 rear end and put in a 3:56. OH, gas milage went from 11-12 to 19-21 also.
Different car totally and it will run with a new GT stang up to 60 with no problems (well as of 2 years ago, not sure what they have in the newer ones.)

Cost of the AOD swap was around $2500 and it took me about two months as I was the first to do on a T-Bird X frame and everyone said you would have to cut and I did not have to cut but paid the price in the amount of time it took.
My plans were to do it on a weekend, good thing I don’t write estimates for a mechanical shop!

Since these heads are known to acquire cracks and over the years I have replaced one and repaired the other, if they ever do crack again, then I will buy the Aluminum heads but that would be my only reason.

Richard no need for apoligy,i was looking for opinions and happy for good and bad. ones. some interesting reading came from the testing of thes heads and looks like i could get 300plus with the iron heads which is enough for a old guy cliff
