FORKLIFT Wont Start

Hey guys, I have an old komatsu forklift with a Nissan 4 cyl propane engine. The sob wont start for nothing. Its got fuel, spark, timing, compression, I cant even get the thing to fire off of a shot of either. The complete ign has been redone, new carb and regulators. Any Ideas

no run

are u sure u have spark.. like u've seen the plugs fire ??? next thing is fuel.. but if u shot ether in and still nothing i'd be on the spark issue, u should at least get a back fire..

spark check

How did you check for spark. ? out of coil wire , or each spark plug., and are the plugs good. propane doesn't like cold weather. the ether should have helped it at least sputter.

And be careful of the Fuel Regulator (LP engines are known for this problem)-

Well here is the thing, with the plug in the cyl, my timing light dosent flash but when I remove the plug, ground it, the spark will jump and my timing light flashes

It sounds like the engine ground is missing somehow. That means that there is no circuit which means there is no spark with the plug installed. When you ground the pulled plug, are you grounding it to the engine or something else? frame/etc.

one of my forklifts at work has the "No Start" issue-----If you don't know
how to start it.

While cranking in "START" many of the forklift ignition switches drop power to the coil , and when you let go of the key---there will be ignition.

My forklift---get her cranking and gently turn the key back to get ignition.


Reason for this----the wire from the ignition side of the starter relay
is missing or broken.

Youo need that wire to provide a FULL 12v while starting to get the thing to fire.

Pretty sure my forklift does not have that wire, so I gotta get it spinning first.

(Think GM starting systems up to 73)

Both of my OLD lifts are Clarks from the 50s----but they still work better than
my new lift (about 15 years old)

Another thing----the choke----is it working.
One of my old ones will absolutely refuse to even try to start
first thing in the morning if the choke is not pulled all the way.
Immediately after fire---have to push it in better than halfway to keep it running----after about 10 seconds all the way in.

FYI---all 3 of my lifts are propane-----1 of the three will quit running before tha tank is empty----the other 2 will run the tank out.

I tried grounding the engine right to the battery and put a jumper from the positive right to the positive to the coil and still nothing

Simular problems I've had with forklifts not starting. Cold fuel. If the forklift is not in a heated building try placing the tank in a warm shop for a few hours.
I've had the valve lash go tight and hold the valves off the seats just enough to keep it from firing.
The lock off stick open and make the mixture go so rich that it won't fire even on ether. Pull the hose that connects the regulator and carb off of the carb and crank the engine. if you get a white fog from the hose that's way too rich. If this happens shut the gas off and crank the engine to clear it out and then it will hit on either.
I'm not very good with the newer electronic feed back regulator/ lock off combo's. I've had a lift that had the electronic feed back brain box go bad.

Just that comment, visual spark when pulled from the engine and timing light lighting/ vs no timing light lighting when the plug is installed would indicate something within the ignition has been over looked as its creating such a weak spark that it wont jump the gap when the plug is under compression.

Tell us what type of distributor system it has and what you HAVE replaced so far and that might help narrow it down.

By the way can you recall what color the spark was, blue or very orangy in nature ?.

One more thing you need is air. Be sure the carburetor has an air supply.

LP?.........Take the fuel tank connection off and put it back on slowly.....We used to find when changing tanks, that if you connected it to quickly, it would not open the safety valve properly and it wouldnt get gas (propane)
