Found a crack in the Number 6 cylinder

I got a call from the shop thats working on my flathead, the guy told me he found a crack in the #6 sleeve going up to the deck lid the crack then goes across the decklid into a intake valve. The crack can repaired but I don't know how much it'll cost me? should i go and find another flathead?

cracked block

If the crack were contained only in the cylinder, I would recommend having the cylinder sleeved, however, since it goes up into the valve bridge work, I think the better solution would be to find another block. You could probably repair your current one but, at what cost? And if its not done properly, the crack will continue to grow.

.....number one choice is get another block. If there was no choice then chance the fix. But it will always be in your mind is the crack fixed ok or will it show up again ? The sleeve will solve the cyl problem, but the deck crack is not guarenteed to not haunt you later.

Have It Fixed

Most flat heads are cracked, so I would have it fixed. I would just pin the crack with lock n stitch pins and sleeve the cylinder. I've done it before, and it's not a tough deal to do.

I have desided because of the crack on the deck lid, and the cost of fixing it I have decided to go with a OHV motor, but i still ant that 50's look. I have a running 292 y block, but i can't realy find any high performance parts for it. Or my other choice would ,maybe be a 390 or a 400 bigblock FORD ONLY.
