Four Wheel Drive Question

I believe this would be in the right section. My Mom owns a 1996 Mitsubishi Montero. The 4wheel drive works fine and everything but when your driving the 4 wheel drive indicator lights flash on and off until you shut the car off, then come back on when you turn the car back on. There are no weird noises or any fluid leaking. It locks in to 4 wheel low, and high just fine no odd noises or anything. Anybody have any thoughts?

Idicator light flashing means the computer has detected a fault of some sort. Could be as simple as a speed sensor.
Get someone to scan test the 4WD system to determine the code and fault

Would Auto-zone be able to do that with their diagnostic machines, or is this something a dealer would have to do? If it is a dealer job does it have to be a Mitsubishi dealer or and service shop? The closest Mitsubishi dealer is about 50 miles away.
