Frame rail question on 1974 Challenger

Has anyone here ever replaced a front frame rail on a '70-'74 Challenger? Just wondering what I'm up against. I've seen replacement frame rails that just slip over the old one, are these safe?

They're safe if properly installed. Remember you're dealing with a unibidy car and the "frame" is really integral with the rest of the body. Using replacement rails that slip over the rotted out originals is by far the easiest way to go and is used extensively when restoring Mopar muscle cars, but keep in mind that the surrounding material (that you're welding the new rail to) has to be in decent condition for the repair to be any good.

I would think the top portion of the frame rail would be solid since all the crap inside the rail would sit on the bottom where it rotted out.

Most of the time thats the case. However when the floors are rotted out sometimes the area where the frame rail is attached is rotted too. If its not and the top section is good and solid you shouldn't have a problem.

Mine is rotted in the area where the K-member mounts to. Under the car it's still solid.

Then I don't expect you'll have much of a problem.
