hi trader im new to this site. i just picked up a 57 chevy sitting on a 86 chevy impala station wagon frame and the tires rub on the quarters i havnt decided what to do yet.but a friend of mine says that there is a gm rearend that is shorter in length you might want to call a local junk yard and ask them if its true. thats what im gonna do but not for a few weeks yet and when i di ill let you know how i made out hope this helps some

Hi, I'm new here. Just happened to see the question about a 56 frame swap. Met a guy at a weekend cruz in Maryland with a 57 P/U. Said he used the front end out of a Aspen/Volare. Said it took him about 4 hrs to complete and that he had never done anything like it before. All he had to do was cut out a small notch on both sides of the truck to clear the shocks and weld in a small patch to fill in the notches. No frame chops or anything. Donor car came complete w/ disc brakes and steering. Didn't even drop the fenders if I remember correctly. If a novice can do it, mayb any of us could. Hope this will help.

NOT much help as far as telling you what TO get (although most everyone uses the s-10) but i can tell you what NOT to use, and that's pretty much anything with a big hump in the frame like the 79 frame my 55 is on in my album.

volare is a great swap cause you can raise and lower at will, but from what i have heard, rebuild parts for them are non existant and they all need to be rebuilt

as for tires rubbing i would get wheels with a different offset

I feel your pain! I am trying to do the same thing to a '59 Chevy short bed step side pickup! I am new to the Hotrodders bulletin board as well. We can follow each others' listing. Hopefully something will turn up for what we are seeking. I too thought that I would find a knowledge source on this bulletin board for someone that has already completed such a project. Certainly it is much easier to listen to the voice of experience before replicating mistakes that someone else has already made. I have found some vehicles with the same wheelbase dimensions, but I have not been able to find any information regarding the vehicle track width. Someone gave me the advice of "getting-out the tape measure and start measuring in a salvage yard". Although this is practical advice it is probably not the most efficient. This is where the person that has already done this project, whether swapping rolling chassis or front clips, would be invaluable for their specific, experienced advice. It would have been nice to have searched the knowledge base before i had 3 piles in the shop.(Hind sight is 20/20.)however the piles are the original frame of my 55gmc 2nd series, a front and rear xjs setup,and the 81 gmc frame that i just removed from the 55 body due to its ugly looking suspension. The latest plan is a 2X4x1/8 wall steel tubing set of frame rails using the jag suspension front and rear. Drawing it up ahead of time would be helpful. A Blazer has a frame that is already boxed & they do not kick up as far in the rear.The 2 door has a shorter frame than the 4 door.

bolt on,yes bolt on the front end from a 70's to80's chevy truck!!there's an article on it in this site on front suspension i think. do some checking ,might be a way to go and price is right!! JOHN

Did you realize that the post that you just responded to is over a year old?

My friend took a 1988 1/2 ton chevy step side,removed the cab and installed a 1958 chevy cab leaving the drive train and 88bed intact. It made a very nice truck.
