re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?
Zipfactor.
Our posting got me thinking about the last time I checked the oil in my wifes Caprice. The main reason I put the Frantz on her car was that I never remembered to change the oil often enough, not sure why! LOL This morning I went out to check the level as we're going out of town today and probably taking her car. Level was ok and the oil looked amazingly clean. I checked the milage on the oil ( wrote it down this time when I installed the Frantz and trans filter). The oil has 3,648 miles on it. Based solely on the color of the oil, I won't be changing it any time soon, but it is time to change the TP. Here is a picture of the oil I took off the stick. ![]() My wifes car is 20 years old this year. It has a little over 71,000 miles on it. It has a carb and is driven in town about 99% of the time, all stop and go. Given how the car is driven and the fact that its old and has a carb and not fuel injection, i'm pretty happy with everything so for. I've been using Chevron 10-30 in all my vehicles for the past year or so. Nice thing is that Checker has it on case sales about once a month with rebates. Cost is .49 a quart. The color of the oil is not too far from the original color when new. And just to clarify a couple of things. A bypass filter is not designed to be a full flow filter. They cannot pass enough oil to feed the engine. Thats why spin on filters are still used. They are more porus so they can keep up with flow, but don't to as good a job as a finer media would. Its basically the best of both worlds. Personally, I like the fact of not having to change my oil all the time and knowing that its as clean as I can keep it. I also like the fact that I don't have a huge pile of 5 gallon cans of used oil in my shop all the time either. To each his own I guess. I just don't like being slammed out of ignorance, but i've been down this road many times before so its not a huge deal. If you decide to buy any bypass filter, I think you will enjoy the differences in your oil changing schedule and its also a very good learning experience. Good luck and have fun. re: frantz filter
Greetings,This is my first post. I came on line a not long ago because of my reinterest in Frantz oil filters. I had been driving for years before they were introduced. I have used them for years and gradualy stopped. I still have three one on my 50 Chevy moving van and two on the shelf. I plan to instal one on my tractor, and one on my 4wd chevy van. I will instal one on my GmC safari if room permits. The Chevy moving van has the same engine I put in when I lived in southern Cal in 1970 and is still nice. I have never been able to get oil that was clear as honey but clean and light was no problem. I'm a journeyman mechanic, When I worked on VW's I had one on my Vdub. I have been reading posts on different forms and on one form some guys only posting to heckel the fellows who wanted to exchange info about the filter, thats too bad. I took a couple off the shelf and cleaned them up one still had a roll in it so I put it in the stove, I live in the mountains now, and it burned like a log. I didn't have a fitting that cut the oil intake down I used brass valves, I may do it different now. Richard

re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?
Hi Richard and welcome to the HR forums!
Let us/me know how your installs go. I'm still running all 3 of my Frantz filters. Just ordered up a new case of elements from Deborah about a month ago. I also have an oil seperator (Condensator, '50s era) on my PCV system on my truck. It works good too. Like some, I like messing with stuff like that. "old school" is not necessarily "bad science". re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?
well, i know this is an old post but i see Jmark replied today. i have a story for you:
when i was taking automotive in college many years ago i remember a rep from frantz coming into our class to talk about oils. at the start of the presentation he had a rig with a frantz filter, recirculating pump and a glass resovoir. he put a roll of toilet paper in the filter and asked for some drain oil out of the shop. the rig ran during the presentation and when it ended the oil looked like it was just poured out of the can--brand new...I WAS IMPRESSED!!! i forgot about this a long time ago but as soon as i started reading this thread it all came back. from the demonstration i saw that filter definatly works!!! |

re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?
Greetings, I could never get my oil to origional color. I remember they said Delo made by I think Chevron would but someone I knew tried Delo and said it still became dark with the heat.

Yea, quite often the oil darkens with heat and age, but not because it's dirty. Just how it works out chemically I guess.

re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?
What Oil? Good question! LOL I have about 50-60 quarts in my cabinet at any given time. I hit the rebate offers when ever they come around. Most likely it's Chevron 10-30, got lots of that, along with Shell and Castrol.

Confirmation of oil color and quality
Hi everyone. New guy aboard here.
I just wanted to share my dipstick oil color to confirm what results Jmark had. This oil has not been changed in the engine for approximately four years and is just like new. I'm out of the oil supply so I don't recall what oil I actually used but it is not synthetic and it was just off-the-shelf oil. I use 30W. I do have a very old model Frantz Oil Filter installed on the car and change the TP regularly with Frantz brand for best results. I bought this car originally in '88, sold it to my niece who was in high school, and bought it back from her when I learned she was going to trade it in on some used T-bird. Gotta love those Samurais. |

Frantz Filter
Greetings, I installed one of the Frantz I had on my Tractor a Michigan 55A, and another on our 1994 GMC Safari. On the Safari I tucked it next to the steering column, the miles on the Safari is near 240,000. I didn't change the oil or filter on ether after install. I use Scott tp. Years ago I didn't know which paper to use and for years used what ever we had with no bad effect I know of. I live in the mountains I put used filters in the wood stove, they burn like a log given enough of draft. Richard

re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?
Richard,
Did you find any issues with the cardboard center tube being too large? I haven't found a toilet paper that fits nice and snug over the metal center tube in the filter unit yet. That's the main reason I use the TP from Frantz Oil Filters. I note some users actually cheat by using rubber "O" rings around the metal tube to take up some of the space preventing unfiltered leakage. |

RE: cardboard center
Greetings, yes the centers are too large I wrap tp around the post before pushing on the roll. You have to take quite a bit off to get the can to fit. I tamp the tp between the post and the cardboard so the oil doesn't find a freeway past the roll. I saw another user that used Orings on the center post but the Oring I have are too thick, this way seems to work. Have you installed one or thinking about it? Richard
