Just read your post. The filters are also old. As old as you can get. I've had them for almost 50 years

re: Frantz filter system, buy or not to buy?

Richard,

Yes, I've installed MANY of them. I actually sell them but that's not why I'm here. I have three on my vehicles and one on my tractor. I am one of very few who actually installs them for my local customers.

I have not heard of wrapping TP around the center post before installing the TP in the unit. Actually, I like that much better than the "O" ring procedure but when you compare how nice the Frantz TP fits on the center post and the low difference in cost, you probably would not use toilet paper again.

After this explanation I hope I'm not offending anyone or sounding like I'm pushing the product.

I note some users actually cheat by using rubber "O" rings around the metal tube to take up some of the space preventing unfiltered leakage.

Speaking on the newer model filters, you do NOT need to worry about the center tube being snug on the pipe. There is a ridge on the base of the housing that pushes into the TP and seals it up.

Using store bought Scott TP is kinda tough. It's a quarter inch wider roll so pushing it into the can, can be tough. It's also bigger around and you usually need to un-wind quite a bit to make it fit, but it does make for a snug fit.

How many miles have you put on in 4 years? (yikes!!!)

If you are going to push it that far, you really should send in an oil sample to have it checked out. Conventional oil will rarely go more then 6-10 thousand before it's additive package begins to deplete.

It may "look" good, but be completely worn out and in need of a change.
