Front 4-bar/4-link Help Please

Looking At Putting A Front Coil Over Set Up With A Straight Axle And 4 Links
(late 60's Drag Car Style)

Quest.1- Is There A Minimum Length For The 4 Bars?
This Is On An Anglia Drag Car, I Don't Have A Lot Of Room
Bbc. 3000#, 50/50 Weight Distribution

Quest. 2- Should The Bars Run Parralell With The Frame Or Taper Back From The Axle To The Frame?

Quest. 3- Should The Heims And Rods Be Chrome Molly?

Thanks.
Geo.

4 bars

The 4 bar length. depends on steering used, If you have the steering box back on the frame rail and the drag link parallel to the frame you have to get the length and mounting right so as not to get bump steer, I you go to google books and preview coddingtons book. I think it was how to build hot rod suspensions there are various diagrams, normally the 4 bars and drag length are the same length and parallel. In the 60's a lot of the old dragsters had shorter hairpins and a very long drag link. when the front wheels came off the ground some of them would turn the front wheels 20 ^.

On my Model A I've got a tube dropped axle with a mono leaf and a 4 bar. Im also running Vega cross steer. The bars are approx. 24" long and are not parallel to the chassis. The 4 bar mounts coming off the batwings are wider than the chassis mounting points. Meaning the 4 bar axle pickup points are wider than the chassis pickup points, thus the 4 bars will not be parallel with the chassis. You will want the drag link to be parallel to the axle and tie rod as much as possible. As far as the heims being chrome moly or not, I would check with the sanctioning body/class you plan on racing in.

4 Bar

Keith,
About How Much Wider Are They On The Axle Vs The Frame?
And Are The Paralle With The Frame Front To Back?
I Have Seen Some In Pictures That Do Not Seem To Be Parrelle With The Frame.

Angie1948, the CL of the spring perch is approx. 36" wide which is where the 4 bar would mount on the axle. The width of the frame 4 bar mounts are 26" OD, so knock off approx. 2" for a CL of 24". These are approx. dimensions as it's hard to get exact numbers even though I have the engine out. No, the 4 bars are not parallel to the frame front to back. They are however parallel to the chassis plane. I hope that makes sense. I will try to attach a pic if not go to flickr.com and look up blwn31 under people. If you need anything else let me know.
