Front pump going bad?

I need some help determining if the front pump on my tranny is going bad. It is an Olds 400th in a Chevy shortbed. The problem i am having is a buzzing or whinning from my floorboard right were the tranny is. But it only happens around 2800-3200 Rpm. Also, would a bad pump cause the shift kit to not perform as well because it does not shift hard still, only sometimes. I have regularly checked the fluid and it's full. My Dad thinks it's the stall converter and insists i put the old stock one back in and it will make a huge difference. But, i want to do this tranny bit once and need direction so i don't pull this thing off, put the old converter back in, then find out the pump is bad and i just wasted all that time. Thanks

Gary

You said you changed the fluid, but did you change the filter? TH400 use a FILTER not a screne and a cloged filter will make a whinning sound and perfomance will be greatly changed. If you dont have one already put a tranny cooler on decause of the stall conveter slipage in the conveter causes heat heat cooks fluid. cooked fluid cloges filters. Also use type F fluid after a flush with type F to clean all dextron out of system. 400 almost bullit proof have been driving and 1320ing one in my Toyota for 3 years only service required. Good Luck. J.F.
