what they are asking for is the front pan seal rail (timing cover) on early small blocks it is only about 1/4" thick, later ones use a much thicker front pan seal
Thanks Bobcrman, If I understand what your saying beings I'm using an aftermarket 2 piece timing cover and a aftermarket Hamburger oil pan does It make sense to use a thicker front seal?.

install the pan and measure the gap, go from there.
