front suspension swap
well hello all. I have a 39 packard that needs a front end suspension. now I am on a tight budget so Hiedts and fatman although nice are unaffordable. I have looked at camar :welcome: os, aspens, dodge trucks and even a chev g20 van set up. All have front steering and height issues. Also I need to retain the packard front rad support so front torsion bars and steering box locations are critical. Has anyone done a swap??? I need all the help I can get. cheers

thanx for the reply. I looked and measured that up and the math just doesn't work out. also too much crap in front of the x member which interferes with the packard rad/grille crap. I am looking at an AMC pacer, told it is a bolt on/off deal with minor mounting plate fabs. ever hear of this? :confused:

The Pacer is still front steer, and parts are expensive. Try looking at a Jaguar XJ6 or XJ12. they are rear steer, and the crossmember bolts in. Chevy bolt pattern on the hubs. Parts are available from NAPA, and prices are reasonable.

46 1/2 chevy with amc pacer X member
just completed mine on a 46 1/2 chevy it came out excellent with the kit, disc rack pinion. ball joints and all bushings ouch $450 total cost of parts,Big bonus was keeping stock steering column. adapter plate kit was a C note also. it was way less money then new and no mods on rad or grill components. bonus is it will unbolt during build up which is was a big bonus. I used 1989 chevy 1/2 ton rear coils and cut them after motor and tranny weight was installed for my height

Around here the Pacer front ends are non existent and they are w-i-d-e for most applications. The Jag setup is nice but price depends on how many are in the wrecking yards near you. They are a bit bulky for some applications though. If you can get it all hidden under the fenders it might be the way to go though. It's a complete unit and although repair parts may be a little more spendy than some other brands they should always be available on down the road while the stuff for the Pacers is already hard to find through regular sources.

There is always the Mustang II style setup and aftermarket crossmembers can be found at every price range from the setup for around 200 and weld it yourself to the high end stuff.
