I installed a front sway bar on my '56 Chevy during a front end rebuild. The car handled better by a seat of the pants evaluation and it does not have power steering. Seems I picked it up from Danchuk but don't recall for sure.

Yes, a sway bar helps to control body roll in turns, on eneven surfaces, or even during windy conditions.
As a general rule, the larger the sway bar diameter, the "stiffer" the suspension feels laterally... more resistance to "leaning" and "diving". It just makes you feel a litle more "in control".
