Fuel Filter - Frame mounted

Hi guys,
As some of you know, I'm a "parts guy" ... but this one is driving me nuts!

I'm looking for a frame-mounted (remote) cannister-style fuel filter / sediment bowl for my truck project, which I want to mount between the tank and my Holley "Blue" electric fuel pump.

I KNOW that I've seen them (chromed?), but I just can't recall where.

I do know that they were used on 1979 (-ish) Ford Medium / Heavy trucks with a gas engine. I think that the Ford number was D9HZ-9155-A which was sold under the Motorcraft P/N FG-789. If this is the correct one, it has been discontinued by Ford.

They used the same filter and bowl that was used on many Ford and GM fuel pumps.



Here's a picture of the cannister element (WIX 33271 or Motorcraft FG-1-A):


Can anyone help me find this thing?

I'm confused (as usual). You describe a frame mount canister style but show a pump mounted filter asm.

What are you working on and do you want a replaceable canister style or an inline style? Gas or diesel? A sediment bowl to me describes the style that had the glass bottom that you could see and drain the water from also. A water separator style is also available similiar to a spin-on oil filter with a drain petcock. OEM or aftermarket?

At one time I had a 76 F 150 4x, it used a pump just like pictured. The truck originally had a 360 but when I bought it it had a 390. I don't know if it was a 360 pump or a 390.

Found those first couple pages of google search. I did not find anything on 79ish fords at rockauto.com and they are usally right on with oem replacements.

The unit that I'm looking for IS for gasoline.
It uses EXACTLY the same "steel can" (which I believe Ford actually calls a "sediment bowl") and EXACTLY the same filter element as the fuel pump pictured in my original post.

I have been told by others (that I spoke to in person this afternoon) that GM used the same (or at least very similar) remote filter on their gasoline-powered 3-ton trucks.

In fact, the shop foreman at a school-bus repair shop says that he had saved about 20 of these filter assemblies that had removed from their fleet of school buses when they had been converted from gasoline to propane.

They sold the last of those buses at the end of the 2005-2006 school year, and scrapped any spare parts (including these filters ... D-Oh!)

I just checked that application at Wix's website, and the cartridge number is identical.

As far as "OEM or Aftermarket?" ... OEM for sure (as per above), but I'm pretty sure that I've also seen these units in gleaming chrome as well in somebody's catalog. I've checked the Mr.Gasket and Holley websites ... but wasn't able to find it there.

Yes! This link shows the metal can and pleated paper element. (image in the center of the 2nd row)



They also mention that this is a replacement element for an OMC 0982230 fuel filter assy ... another clue!

I did just update my journal recently, stating that things have been going pretty slow.

95% of the chassis work is done (brakes, steering, suspension)
The engine and trans have both been rebuilt, and are on the frame.
I'm waiting for a brace for the transmission cross-member.
I'll still need to have a driveshaft fabbed up.
I'm going to have to install a posi carrier before this thing hits the streets.

The rad support and battery tray are in place, and the original 6-cyl radiator is in position.
I have cut the 79 C20 454 upper hose, and the 66's 250 lower hose to fit the 454.
Heater hose outlets are plugged.
6 litres of Shell "Rotella T" 15W40 and a GM "EOS" are in the crankcase.

The headers (but no exhaust system) are gasketed and bolted in-place.
The battery is charged.

I still need to:
Add engine coolant.
Install trans cooler and lines.
Install vacuum hoses to distributor and trans.
Get this @#^&* fuel system plumbed!
THEN I can fire this sucker UP!

My buddy Steve is still working on the cab sheet-metal. He has the floor patches and rocker panels welded in place, and the doors are bolted on, at least temporarily, to check that everything is aligned properly (the doors open and close).

I'm definitely finding that "there's too much month left at the end of the money!"

OK...I see now said the blind man...

You wanted the actual cannister to be like the cannister on the fuel pump mount filter. If the canister is the same size, you can still get them decorated as they were in the sixties. There was also once a special filter wrench to remove the cannister without damaging it.

Ford used a frame mounted filter assembly which used a spin-on throwaway filter. My 84 Grand Marquis with a 5.0 had one mounted just in front of the right rear tire inside the frame rail. It also has a nice moulded plastic shield around it for protection. Look under any Grand Marquis or Crown Vic and your search will be over.

I don't recall seeing those in my years as a Ford Partsman.
