Question Fuel gauge

My fuel gauge is not functioning in my 1971 Cutlass supreme, the guage does not operate at all. Any suggestions on correcting this problem??

Remove the wires from the gauge and check the terminals for resistance with an ohm meter. If you get a wide open reading, then the gauge winding are toast. Next, check the wire from the gauge to the tank for continuity, if you get zero continuity, replace the wire and try it again. Next, when everything else checks out good, yank the tank and pull the sending unit. The float has either loaded up and sunk to the bottom of your tank or the rheostat slide in the sender is worn and open. Check the sender with an Ohm meter. Ground one test lead to the screw shell and place the other one on the wire terminal on the sender. Running the float arm up and down should cause the meter to react much like your gauge would if it worked. If it doesn't, replace the gauge.
