Fuel Gauge problem

I have a '56 Chevy car that the gauge acts erradically when the engine is at highway speeds and sometimes at lower speeds. The gauge bounces quickly back and forth rapidly from empty to full. I have noticed that if I push on the dashboard, (anywhere, not just the speedometer portion) the gauge goes back to the tank level, but when I quit pushing on it, it goes back to bouncing... I am afraid that the bouncing will eventually ruin the gauge. I have tried grounding the dash, but it doesn't work. Any ideas? Help!!!

Doc here,

Ground the gauge to the dash board or suitable hard ground.

The gauge has a terminal for ground this is the one that you want.

You may want to check and clean all grounds while your in there.
