fuel mixtures/additives

What fuel additives worked for you (fuel injection cleaner, tranny fluid works I've been told, im not sure about new computer cars with that stuff.)? Do/did you mix your own fuel? What was your recipie?

Here's my experiments...

ran weedwacker for abour 5 minutes by spraying hairspray down the carb. It (engine internals) was all gunked up with hairspray by the time it stalled out and the piston didn't look as bad as I thought it would (scrapes and gouges), but there was some marks.

added some 70% isporopyl alcohol to another weedwacker. This time it was in the fuel tank+regular gas/oil mix. It ran well but the fuel pump diaphragm went bad pretty quick.

added some paint thinner to gasoline in grandma's lawnmower, ~8 oz/~2 gallons. I know paint thinner burns super-good, maybe I can get it to go faster, stupid plastic tractor with inaccessible spark plug and preset (you cant tune it) carb.

put some tranny fluid into fuel tank of my lawnmower. carb was tuned rich to begin with so all i got was flaky carbon deposits. I should have tuned the carb first.

BG spray-carb/tb/upper engine cleaner (not sold in stores, its at some car dealerships)- dodge 3.9v6 (friend's gf's truck)- it stalled a lot and stuff. After the cleaner it ran a little bit better. She got a new exhaust and it runs like a champ. She should have gotten something nicer than a muffler boy's "stock" setup.

my real-dad's pickup truck (ford)- I was 2 at the time and I put a few pebbles/rocks in the fuel tank. It didn't help it any. I did help change plugs when I was 2, so I wasn't all bad.

why in the hell are you doing this stuff to other people's small motors? Paint thinner is not something you put into a motor, dude, you could destory the seals in that little carburetor. What you're thinking of is toluene and its an octane substitute for people who can't get proper gasoline. IN your lawnmower's case, it will just lose a little power with it.

try some rc nitro fuel next, like 7 bux for a quart at hobby store. Give yer weedwacker some pep.

Seriously tho, are these like old engines? I really hope these are old junker engines. Not a 600$ honda or snapper or something....YIKES.

there date back quite a while, my mower is a 73 or so 8hp briggs, the weedwacher I added alcohol to was the gutless 13cc one here after my dad got a nice 25cc one that runs off the recommended fuels only.

the one i ran off hair spray my grandma and grandpa gave to me because it was ancient, the engine was at the bottom right by the string part, heavy as hell, and the pull-start had to be manually rewound since that was messed up.

so, nobody knows of anything on how to make your own fuel system cleaners or anything? I heard acetone is in a lot of them.

I use Berryman's Injector Cleaner in most any engine I own if it needs it, sometimes even if it doesn't. But if I couldn't find it, I'd go down to the local paint store & buy a gallon of toluene & put a half-pint or so in the tank, maybe even throw some acetone or MEK in the mix if I really felt energetic.

CAUTION: All of those chemicals tend to eat plastic & paint, and occasionally brain & liver cells, so don't get too overly friendly with them.
