fuel pump help

ok one thing is establish here i am an idiot
so I'm cleaning my room and I find a fuel pump that my friends dad gave me. He said when you but this on just be sure to tighten the bolts that hold the push rod so I tighten them as tight as they will go. Then take the fuel pump off and make sure the rod didn't fall so im really happy(because it didn"t) then I disconnected the fuel lines and the one from the tank to the fuel pump comes of pretty easy then I go to the pump to the carb line and its striped in so I use a little break free and it still wont come so i take it off it the fuel filter so I go clamp the old on in the vice and get it off with great difficulty then I notice that the fuel line has two kinks(question number one should i unkink them or get a new fuel line?) so then I go back and check everything over and i notice that the push rob fell down(question number 2 how do i get it back up in there?)
thanks for any help
Tyler

re: fuel pump help

You can push the rod up with your finger, and just make sure that the pump lever is under it when you replace the pump, also use a new gasket. Replace the fuel line it is not a big expense. Joe

re: fuel pump help

worst case , just unbolt the fuel pump plate that's bolted to the block. or use a magnet to pull the rod up. if you get a pair of needle nose pliers in there , you should be able to grab the rod and push it forward , then get a screwdriver or finger in there to hold it while you sneak the pump lever under the rod. it can be tricky since that rod gets so darn slippery. it will have ya cussing but it can be done.

re: fuel pump help

I have had luck using a hack saw blade to get under the end of the rod and pushing it up.

re: fuel pump help

Long ago I gave up trying to push that @#$#% rod back into position. With just a little more effort you can remove the 2 bolts on the fuel pump plate and get a hold of the rod. I usually remove it, smear it with a light grease or vaseline to hold it in position when I reinstall it. Saves agravation.,

re: fuel pump help

haha i rember this is how i found this great board lookn for a how to on a sbc fuel pump. Get a new line, with the right size ends, if needed get a flair tool kit if you cant find the right lenth line to bend up. get a bender from the parts store or use a decent sized socket and warp it around that to make your bends, keeps you from krimpinig it. With the push rod, take the 2 lil bolts out pop the plate off and let the rod slide out and put some grease on it and stuck er up there. good luck

re: fuel pump help

In case its not known on the front of the block their are 2 bolt holes in the casting... The bottom hole goes all the way through to the pump rod... If there is a bolt in that bottom hole take it out but keep it handy (to put back in place so oil will not come out above 3K rpm)... Have another bolt with long threads or allthread rod that will screw into the hole deep enough to contact the pump rod... Remove the fuel pump adapter cover and the rod can be pushed back into place then hand tighten the bolt coming from the front till it locks the rod in place... Replace the adapter cover and fuel pump then remove the bolt retaining the rod in place and put the shorter bolt that you removed back in place... GM made it easy for you but its not always known...

re: fuel pump help

If you put the #1 piston on TDC, the pump rod will be fully retracted, then use a bolt to hold the rod in place, then install pump, the replace bolt with a shorter one.
