Fuel Sender Woes

Hey guys, I gotta a few quick questions for yall. Is it possible to modify a fuel sending unit and still have it function properly? I have a fuel cell that measures 42''x17''x6'' and I was wanting to use a stock fuel sender ('96 Firebird) to feed the LT1 (same car) but the assembly is to long for the shallow cell. would it be possible to bend or cut the lines that would go inside the tank and still have everything, including the float assembly, work properly? If not, does someone know of any other way to feed this engine? I really want to keep the pump in the tank if it is possible. thanks guys
