I have 83 Buick electra (sbc) an it gets to much fuel pressure . When taking off gas cap it fumes for a couple seconds and also it constantly floods carb even when not running sometimes.. and my gas gauge doesn't work... so could that all be fuel sending unit?
I would doubt it. All the sending unit does is provide resistance to the gauge. The gauge is calibrated to measure the difference in resistance and show on the gauge as a fuel level. First thing I'd do is make sure there is power, then make sure you have a good ground o the sending unit. Possible its a bad sending unit or a bad gauge.

About the fumes and flooding.....sounds like your gas cap, if a vented cap, is not venting........Or, if its not a vented cap, a return line to the tank is plugged.
fuel sending unit has nothing to do with it also 83 electra came with 5.0 liter olds so someone dumped an sbc in it no biggee. The problem is that the tank is not vented. Check the tank vent canister ( evaporative system) it is probably blocked due to fuming which is why they put EVAP systems on a car to begin with. You need to hook it back up or a least put a small hole in the gas cap to vent the tank. If you have emmission testing like pennsylvania does that wont work as the emmision systems at least have to appear to function. You can find the emission diagrahm online I am sure.If you park your car in your garage you will want to have the evap system working as the fumes could reach dangerous levels and be ignited by pilot lights and sparks and such
the fuel gauge problem could be the sending unit .. my bad but has nothing to do with flooding and excessive pressure UNLESS someone blocked the EVAPORATIVE LINE at the sending unit
Rode around today without gas cap an it was all fine.
