Funny car on the street

I remember reading an article in one of the car magazines back in the 70's about someone who bought the old Hawaiian funny car and converted it to street use. Maybe it wasn't the Hawaiian, but it was a funny car that was converted.

Memory getting bad, I can't remember what car magazine or year/issue that article was in.

Can someone help me out with that and give me a Name of the magazine / Year / issue?

Thanks!

Ken

Yes....I remember having that issue.........probably one of the big 3 (Hot Rod, Car Craft, PHR) as those were mostly what I bought back then.

I'm no help in terms of the article you are referring to but my hunch would be that it was a funny car from a somewhat earlier time period than the Hawaiian, maybe more in the Arnie Beswick era. The earlier funny cars were actually converted from stock vehicles and in many cases retained the left side steering, an original (but highly modified) frame, at least one working door, the dash, a full but gutted body and many other stock components so converting back to street use would be within the realm of possibility.

To convert a flopper (like the Hawaiian or the other funnies from that period) for legal street use would be a MAJOR major task since it would have center steering, no working doors (I don't believe the Hawaiian even had an overhead escape hatch), a tube chassis and virtually no interior components. Not impossible I suppose...but quite a task.

But if you locate the article or further info, it would be fun to see.
