Talking FWD to RWD?

Ok. Bare with me here. I've always thought putting a mustang 5.0 in a 86-88 ford escort would make an excellent screamer. So far I'm just getting measurements and whatnot. My basic plan is to take the chassis of a 86-90 mustang and put the body of an escort on it. I know the escorts a unibody but I think I have a plan to get around that. Any other suggestions or helpful comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

John

A plasma cutter would be the first wise investment, your going to be cutting...a lot.

Do you really want to pit thousands of man hours into this? Hey, not knocking it! It just seems like more than I would want to get into, and what could you sell it for when you're done?

The FOX body MUSTANG is a uni-body also. So separating the two and putting them back together is not feasible.

Have you thought of doing this to an early EXP/LN7? Even on the ESCORT, the engine fitment would be tight, but do able. You would have to transfer the trans/driveshaft tunnel to the host car for driveline clearance. Transfer the mounting brackets for the MUSTANG four link suspension setup and you would be half way home.

You might have to install a MUST II suspension, or alter the current strut towers to accept a late BIRD front suspension.

It sounds great. Talk about a sleeper!

We dropped a 351 into and 84 -I think- capri. That thing was a poor excuse for a street car, BUT when you stepped on the gas you went foward at an alarming rate.

I figure that I'd have to cut and re-enforce the host car's firewall to fit the engine and tranny.

Got any pictures, just kidding. By the way does anybody know of anyone that needs one. A plasma cutter, not a wife.

Speaking of, my wife is getting on my nerves as we speak or type, whatever.

If you were going to contemplate something like this I would suggest building a tube frame and mounting factory panels to it using tabs spot welded to the body pieces. At least you have a solid mount for the horsepower, unibodies are weak and flexible...when you cut them apart. It's just sheetmetal remember.

Do the interior in aluminum insulated panels and with some ingenuity turn a sprint car chassis or even have a custom tube frame done up like a 1/2 scale Nascar chassis. At least you would have built something you could sell later. Having this kind of thing safetied and licenseable varies from place to place, check into your local laws. Nothing worse than driving your custom Rod out on sunday and getting towed and impounded because your car is not exactly stock.

Good luck.

You may actually have to use the donor car's firewall. All of this will be easier to cipher on once you have both stripped to basic sheet metal sitting beside one another.

The ESCORT will have a engine/suspension cradle that will have to be removed and discarded. There will still be rails on the bottom of the aprons. This is where you will want to cipher the hanging of a MUST II crossmember for the front suspension.

You may have to transfer the rear rails from the MUSTANG to the ESCORT (shortend) to hang the rear suspension. A little reinforcing and subframe connectors should complete it.

But like 4 Jaw says...you might want to check your state of residence laws regarding engine swaps and kit cars.

Just make sure you start with two straight cars and the easiest way to ascertain the thing will stay straight is to jig it on a a set of clamps similiar to a frame machine.
